Which Type of Automated Gate Is Right for You?

We install three main types of automated gate — each suited to different property layouts and aesthetic preferences. Here's a breakdown of each option.

Sliding Gates

Sliding gates run along a track parallel to your boundary wall or fence, making them ideal for driveways where space is limited or the ground slopes. A single motor drives the gate leaf smoothly along the track — there's no need for swing clearance, so sliding gates work perfectly on tight urban driveways. Available in steel, aluminium or timber infill panels, and can be fabricated to virtually any width. Sliding gates are also a popular choice for commercial sites and industrial units where a wider opening is required.

Swing Gates

Swing gates are the classic choice for residential driveways — opening inward or outward on hinges, they have a timeless, elegant appearance that suits both traditional and contemporary homes. Available as a single leaf or double leaf (bi-parting), swing gates require sufficient driveway depth for the gate to open into. Each leaf is driven by its own underground or above-ground ram motor. We can match swing gates to your existing boundary style, whether that's box section steel, decorative wrought ironwork, or a timber-infill design.

Bi-Folding Gates

Bi-folding (or speed gates) fold back on themselves as they open, requiring only half the space of a standard swing gate and opening significantly faster — typically in under five seconds. This makes them the preferred choice where driveway depth is limited but you don't want to lose the classic look of a hinged gate. Bi-folding gates are also increasingly popular on commercial sites where fast throughput is important. They're available in steel or aluminium, and can be specified to match any boundary style.

Automated Gate Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

Costs vary depending on gate type, size, material and access control requirements. A standard residential sliding or swing gate installation typically starts from around £2,000–£2,500, with larger or more complex installations — including bi-folding gates, full intercom systems or commercial projects — costing more. The best way to get an accurate figure is to arrange a free site visit, where we can assess your exact requirements and provide a no-obligation written quote.

In most cases, no planning permission is required. Automated gates are generally considered permitted development for residential properties, provided they don't exceed 1 metre in height if adjacent to a highway, or 2 metres elsewhere. However, if your property is a listed building or sits within a conservation area, permitted development rights may be restricted. We'll advise you on any specific considerations for your property during your free site visit.

Most residential gate installations are completed within one to two days. This includes groundworks (posts or underground motor pits if required), gate hanging, motor fitting, wiring, access control installation and full commissioning. More complex projects — such as bi-folding gates, large commercial entrances or multi-gate sites — may take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline as part of your quote.

All automated gate systems we install include a manual release mechanism, allowing you to operate the gates by hand in the event of a power cut. Many of our motor systems also support a battery backup option, which keeps the gates operational during short power outages. We'll always walk you through how the manual release works before we finish any installation.
